Speaking of social justice, I’m going to a movie this week-end. It’s “Amazing Grace,” a narrative about William Wilberforce and his eventually successful efforts to outlaw slavery in the British empire.
The recent post and the resulting discussions on the poor Episcopalians brought up the idea of Church organizations being active in social and political issues. Here, I believe, is an example of what the godly individual (not a mega-church) can do to impact a society.
So far, the reviews I’ve read don’t speak very favorably of the movie. But most of the reviewers pretty well demonstrated that they don’t have a clue about Christianity, Christian history, or much of anything else that deals with Christianity.
I’ll let you know how it went next week.
You do realize, though, that a 200 word limit would equate with simply breaking up a 500 or 400 post into multiple ones that, though good/insightful, can take up space still………..and if the old long post are that bad, why not simply erase them or make a challenge to shorten them up to 200 n’ below each?
People like their social activist to be religiously neutral can’t what to see your review.
Mr. Melvin:
The increasing AIDS rate amongst Black women in America is a very important issue to me. In fact, I am now in the planning phase of a safe house and hospice for women with full-blown AIDS. This issue is very dear to me. Through my work with women and children, I remember feeling helpless due to the bureaucracy of working in the public sector. Now my Pastor is providing me with an avenue with which to advocate for women and children afflicted by this disease. If I am able to engage in some form of social activism/advocacy that are shaped via my spiritual convictions, where’s the folly?
I look forward to your point of view.
(MN: There is no folly if I undestand what you are saying. I think you are doing exactly what I’m talking about in living out your convictions rather than trying to establish a “ministry” to be run by the church. You are going out into the world and living out your convictions in society. Take advantage of the avenue and work your little tail off through the power of God.
Go girl!
By the way, I went to see “Amazing Grace” this week-end. Wilberforce did exactly what you say you are doing. Kudos, my girl! Kudos! )
Julia, that is good. I believe the “key” identifier of what you stated was the fact that this was shaped by your “spiritual convictions”.
As long as you are doing this to glorify God, and not establish a “business” that is an awsome endeavor. All to often people portray these things because it is “the right thing to do.”
There needs to be a means to an end here in what you stand for, no my bad…WHO you stand for as to be used by the Lord to being deliverance to those in need.
God is a healer! People have been (especially in the last church I attended - and visited yesterday) healed of AIDs.
God is amazing. I love HIM so much for the graciousness, patience, and care he has continually shown to me.
Thanks.
Hey! Despite GDubs complaints, I’m not really a mean and insensitive ogre. I’m mean, but I’m very sensitive.
Where this one come from? No doubt, it’s funny as a
all get out……makes it seem like our relationship of Shreck and Donkey (”Shreck”…..though I”d have to say I’d like to be “Puss n’ Boots” more so)
And only 7 more hours left until my “Court Date” (trial) offically begins……
A sensitive ogre……….like Shrek, but black and with a beard.
(MN: What!?!? You’ve seen my belly?!?! )
Actually, Gary, I’ll tell you a secret……Mr.Mel’s really not Black…..That’s just part of the costume as “PIMP PUNISHER”. In reality, he’s White just like you…….if you really want to be technical, he’s brownish gold….but white on the inside…….Don’t tell anyone though……(lol lol lol)
