It’s been interesting watching church society (I have a hard time calling what goes on these days “Church”) move further and further away from what seem to me to be the clear standards of scripture. A case in point is the growing practice of women as pastors.
Before you shower me with accusations of being a sexist, a bigot, or a Neanderthal, consider why I say what I’m saying. If I understand the Bible accurately, it seems to present a pretty clear standard. Of course, I could be misunderstanding it. But I don’t think so. I have posted a Word and RTF version of a paper discussing it, but the short version is covered on this page.
The New Testament lays out the initial requirements. For starters, it says:
Now a bishop must be above reproach, married only once, temperate, sensible, respectable, hospitable, an apt teacher, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way. (1 Timothy 3:2-4)
